The Best Tile Options for Underfloor Heating

16 Sep 2025 | BY Matt Matner

Underfloor heating is a modern heating system that warms a room by circulating heat beneath the floor surface. Instead of using traditional radiators or heaters, underfloor heating uses either electric wires or water pipes installed under the floor to gently and evenly heat the space from the ground up.

Underfloor heating provides consistent and comfortable warmth, making it a popular choice for homes. It can be installed under various types of flooring including tiles. However, selecting the right type of tile is crucial for maximising efficiency and preventing issues. This document outlines the best tile options for underfloor heating systems, covering their advantages, disadvantages, installation tips, and maintenance advice.

Ceramic Tiles

Ceramic tiles are a budget-friendly option with good thermal conductivity, allowing heat to transfer efficiently. They are relatively easy to maintain and  come in various styles such as; stone effect tiles, patterned tiles and wood effect tiles. However, they are less durable than porcelain and more susceptible to chipping. Ensure the ceramic tiles you choose are rated for underfloor heating use.

Porcelain Tiles

Porcelain tiles are an excellent choice for underfloor heating due to their superior thermal conductivity and durability. They are water-resistant, making them a suitable bathroom tile and kitchen tile. While they are more expensive than ceramic tiles, their longevity and performance make them a worthwhile investment.

Natural Stone Tiles

Natural stone tiles, such as slate, limestone, and marble, offer excellent heat retention, providing a luxurious and warm feel. However, they are generally more expensive and require regular sealing to prevent staining. Certain stones are porous and can be susceptible to damage from spills. Also note that natural stone can take longer to heat up compared to ceramic or porcelain tiles.

Installation Tips

We would always advice hiring a professional installer to ensure proper installation and optimal performance. Here is a basic outline of how to install tiles on a traditional water pipe central heating system.

  • Apply a flexible self-levelling compound, if required, such as Ultra Tile Fix ProLevel Two Part: This ensures a perfectly even surface for efficient heat distribution.
  • Install uncoupling membrane: This prevents cracks in tiles and grout by absorbing movement and stress from the subfloor.
  • Use a flexible adhesive: Essential to accommodate expansion and contraction caused by temperature changes. We recommend the Mapei Keraquick rapidset tile Adhesive – White 20kg
  • Allow for expansion joints: Provide space for the tiles to expand and contract without cracking.

Summary

Choosing the right tile for underfloor heating involves considering factors like thermal conductivity, durability, cost, and aesthetics. Porcelain tiles generally offer the best balance of performance and value, while ceramic tiles provide a more affordable option. Natural stone tiles offer luxurious heat retention but require more maintenance. Proper installation and regular maintenance are crucial for ensuring the longevity and efficiency of your underfloor heating system. Always consult with professionals for specific recommendations tailored to your needs.
