Frequently Asked Questions

Wall tiles are specifically designed and tested for vertical surfaces, and they are generally not suitable for use on floors. Floor tiles must meet higher standards for slip resistance and load-bearing strength, whereas wall tiles are optimised for adhesion to vertical surfaces and are often lighter and thinner. Using wall tiles underfoot can result in cracking and creates a slip hazard, so always check the tile’s specification before installing it in a location it is not rated for.

The size of wall tile you choose can have a big impact on how a room feels – larger format tiles tend to make a space feel more open and contemporary, while smaller tiles add texture and interest and suit more traditional or compact rooms. In a small bathroom, a large tile with fewer grout lines can create a sense of space, while in a kitchen, a metro or brick-format tile is a classic choice for splashbacks. It is always worth ordering a sample to see how the tile looks at scale in your actual space before committing.

Most glazed wall tiles do not require sealing, as the glaze itself provides a protective, non-porous surface that resists water, grease, and staining. However, the grout joints between tiles can be more porous and benefit from a grout sealant, particularly in wet areas such as shower enclosures or above kitchen hobs. Unglazed or natural stone wall tiles are the exception and should be sealed before grouting to prevent staining.

For bathroom wall tiles, you should use a waterproof or water-resistant tile adhesive that is specifically rated for wet environments, particularly in shower areas or around baths. A flexible adhesive is often recommended, as it can accommodate minor movement in the wall without causing tiles to crack or de-bond over time. Always follow the adhesive manufacturer’s guidelines for coverage and drying times, and ensure the wall surface is clean, dry, and structurally sound before you begin.

When creating a feature wall with wall tiles, the key is careful planning before a single tile is fixed. Find the visual centre of the wall and work outward so that any cuts fall evenly at each side, keeping the layout symmetrical and balanced. Using tile spacers throughout ensures consistent grout joints, and taking the time to set out a dry run of the tiles before applying adhesive can save a lot of time and wasted material in the long run.
