Outdoor Tiles
Outdoor Tiles are manufactured in durable porcelain, making them extremely hardwearing and suitable for highly transited areas and heavy garden furniture. Unlike many natural products, outdoor tiles require very little maintenance, they do not need to be continuously re-stained or treated and are able to withstand the elements of the Great British weather.
Explore our selection of outdoor tiles and choose from a range of styles, sizes and colours. Our large rustic slate outdoor tiles reflect the look and charm of natural slate and our porcelain patio tiles emulate the look of natural stone. Multi size modular tiles allow you to create a truly unique layout and our wood effect tiles combine the natural look of real wood with greater practicality and affordability.
Outdoor tiles come in a multitude of styles, colours, and textures, allowing you to create a unique and personalised look for your outdoor area. Whether you prefer a natural stone appearance or a sleek modern design, there’s a tile option to match your vision. Tiles can mimic materials such as wood, stone, and concrete, providing the desired aesthetic without the maintenance issues associated with natural materials.
Outdoor tile questions
Our outdoor tiles are specially manufactured to withstand the British climate, with frost-resistant properties that prevent cracking during freezing temperatures. They are also at least 20mm thick, giving them the structural strength needed for patios, driveways, and garden paths.
For any external surface, we recommend a minimum R11 slip rating, which indicates the tile provides good grip even when wet. All of the tiles in our outdoor range meet at least this standard, and you will find the exact rating displayed on each product listing.
Our 20mm outdoor tiles are suitable for dry-lay installation, meaning they can be laid onto a compacted gravel or sand base without the need for adhesive in many applications. For a permanent or higher-traffic installation, we recommend using a suitable exterior tile adhesive on a concrete sub-base for a more secure finish.
20mm porcelain outdoor tiles are significantly heavier than standard indoor tiles, typically weighing between 20 and 30 kg per square metre depending on the format. While many confident DIYers do lay them successfully, we recommend having at least two people on hand and using proper tile-lifting equipment, particularly for larger formats.
Measure the total square metreage of the area you wish to tile and then add at least 10% to account for cuts, breakages, and future replacements. Each product page on our site includes a coverage guide, and you can use our online tile calculator to get a more accurate estimate for your specific tile size and layout.
For many UK homes, porcelain outdoor tiles are an excellent choice for patios, terraces, pathways and outdoor entertaining areas.
Porcelain is extremely dense and has very low water absorption. Outdoor porcelain products specifically manufactured for external use can offer excellent resistance to frost, changing weather conditions and everyday wear.
For patios and landscaped areas, 20mm outdoor porcelain tiles are particularly popular because their additional thickness provides a strong and durable surface suitable for external installations.
What type of outdoor porcelain tile should I choose?
One of the great advantages of porcelain is the enormous variety of finishes now available.
Popular options include:
Stone-effect outdoor tiles – ideal for creating the appearance of natural limestone, sandstone or other traditional stones.
Limestone-effect porcelain – perfect for warm, elegant and country-inspired gardens.
Travertine-effect outdoor tiles – offering Mediterranean character with the practical advantages of porcelain.
Slate-effect porcelain – ideal for dramatic contemporary and traditional garden schemes.
Concrete-effect outdoor tiles – a fantastic choice for modern and architectural outdoor spaces.
Wood-effect outdoor porcelain – provides the visual warmth of timber without many of the maintenance requirements associated with natural wood.
For a premium finish, consider choosing an outdoor porcelain collection with a coordinating indoor tile. Using complementary tiles inside and outside can create a beautiful indoor-outdoor living space, particularly around large bifold or sliding doors.
One of the major advantages of outdoor porcelain tiles is their relatively low-maintenance nature.
Many standard glazed outdoor porcelain products do not require sealing because porcelain has very low water absorption and the finished surface has been manufactured to resist everyday external conditions.
This can make porcelain particularly attractive compared with some types of natural stone, which may require sealing and periodic maintenance.
However, always check the manufacturer’s instructions for your particular tile. Specialist, polished or unusual porcelain finishes can have different requirements.
Routine maintenance is relatively straightforward.
Regularly sweep away leaves, soil and loose dirt. For general cleaning, warm water and an appropriate porcelain-safe cleaning product will usually be sufficient.
More stubborn staining may require a specialist porcelain cleaner.
It’s also important to thoroughly clean a newly installed patio and remove installation residues using the correct product and method.
Can you pressure wash outdoor porcelain tiles?
Porcelain itself is extremely durable, but care should still be taken when using a pressure washer.
Avoid using excessive pressure at very close range, particularly around grout or jointing materials. Follow the recommendations of the tile and jointing-product manufacturers.
Regular cleaning can also help reduce the build-up of dirt, organic material and staining, meaning aggressive pressure washing should rarely be necessary.
Yes. Low maintenance is one of the biggest reasons homeowners choose porcelain patio tiles.
Unlike some natural paving materials, porcelain doesn’t generally require ongoing sealing, and its low water absorption makes it easier to maintain.
That makes it particularly appealing for homeowners who want a luxury patio or outdoor living area without excessive maintenance.
Both can produce beautiful outdoor spaces, but they have different characteristics.
Natural stone has genuine variation and character, while porcelain offers consistency, low water absorption and generally straightforward maintenance.
Many outdoor porcelain tiles don’t require routine sealing, whereas natural stones may require sealing and more specialised maintenance.
For homeowners looking for a combination of luxury appearance, durability and low maintenance, porcelain is therefore an excellent option.
