James Hardiebacker Board is made from a combination of Portland cement, sand, and cellulose fibre, which gives it excellent strength and durability as a tile backing substrate. Unlike timber-based boards, this cement-based composition means it will not warp, swell, or degrade when exposed to moisture, making it a reliable foundation for tiles in wet areas such as bathrooms and shower enclosures. This composition also means it bonds extremely well with tile adhesives.
Yes – James Hardiebacker Board is suitable for use in both indoor and outdoor environments, making it a versatile choice for a wide range of projects. Its waterproof properties mean it can withstand the moisture and temperature changes associated with external applications, and it comes backed by a lifetime manufacturer warranty for added peace of mind. Whether you are tiling a bathroom wall or an outdoor terrace, this board provides a stable and long-lasting substrate.
Each James Hardiebacker Board measures 1200mm in length and 800mm in width, giving a surface area of 0.96 square metres per board. To calculate how many boards you need, measure the total square metreage of the area you are covering and divide by 0.96, then add around 10% extra to account for cuts and wastage. If you are unsure, our team at Stoke Tiles is happy to help you work out the correct quantity for your project.
Yes, James Hardiebacker Board is approved for use on both floors and walls, making it a flexible option whatever your tiling project involves. When used on floors, it provides a rigid, stable base that helps prevent tile cracking caused by subfloor movement or flex. It is compatible with a wide range of tile adhesives, and its smooth surface ensures a consistent bond across the entire board.
Before applying tiles, it is recommended to tape and fill the joints between boards using a suitable alkaline-resistant tape and tile adhesive to create a continuous, stable surface. The board itself does not require priming in most cases, but always check the adhesive manufacturer’s guidelines to confirm compatibility. Screws used to fix the board should be countersunk so the surface remains flush and ready to tile onto without any high spots.
