Frequently Asked Questions

A successful tile installation typically requires a few key products working together. You will need a tile adhesive to fix your tiles securely in place, a grout to fill the joints between tiles, and depending on your subfloor condition, a self-levelling compound to create a smooth, even surface before you begin. Stoke Tiles stocks all of these products so you can complete your project from start to finish in one order.

The right adhesive depends on where your tiles are being laid and what type of tiles you have chosen. For example, large-format tiles or natural stone often require a flexible, high-performance adhesive, while standard ceramic wall tiles can be fixed with a general-purpose adhesive. Always check the adhesive’s specification for compatibility with your tile type and whether the area is wet, such as a bathroom or kitchen, as a waterproof or flexible adhesive may be required.

Not always – the suitability of a grout depends on the joint width and the conditions of the area being tiled. Most grouts are labelled for specific joint widths, and floor tiles in high-traffic areas may benefit from a more durable, stain-resistant grout compared to wall tiles. Be sure to check the product description when browsing grouts on Stoke Tiles to confirm it is suitable for your intended application.

A self-levelling compound is a liquid screed-like product that you pour over an uneven subfloor, which then flows and sets to create a flat, smooth surface ready for tiling. If your floor has dips, lumps, or undulations greater than a few millimetres, using a self-levelling compound is strongly recommended to prevent tiles from cracking or becoming loose over time. It is particularly useful when tiling over older concrete floors or when converting a room that previously had carpet or vinyl.

Choosing the right grout colour can significantly impact the final look of your tiled area. A matching or tone-on-tone grout will create a seamless, uniform appearance that lets the tile itself take centre stage, while a contrasting grout colour can highlight the pattern or layout of the tiles for a bolder effect. Stoke Tiles offers a range of colour-coordinated grouts so you can find the perfect match to complete your design.
